Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Presentation

 

Our inaugural Problem-Based Learning (PBL) class presentation took place last week, marking a significant milestone in students' academic journey.

 

Four teams selected themes based on relevant issues in our daily lives: Illegal Parking, Inaccuracy in Generative AI, Unstable Train Brakes, and Undrinkable Tap Water.

Over the past five weeks, students engaged in active discussions of these challenges, ultimately presenting not only their ideas but also the actual prototypes they had made to demonstrate their solutions:

 

  • ・A nudge program to drivers if their current location was in an illegal parking space by smartphone-based GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) positioning
  • ・A pop-up browser extension that quickly provides reliable search results when selecting the answers of generative AI results for helping the user determine their accuracy. 
  • ・A water treatment system using an UV (ultraviolet) lump and TiO2 (titanium dioxide) as a photocatalyst showed bactericidal ability through experiments in which bacteria in water samples were incubated during a few days
  • ・A miniature train system connected with a microcontroller to demonstrate the effect of fuzzy logic to mitigate sudden stop

 

This exercise served as a crucial first step toward the "Graduation Research" project in Year 4, providing students with valuable hands-on experience in addressing complex, real-world problems.

We are confident that this process has equipped them with essential skills for tackling global issues moving forward.
